Title: The sense of the body from within and without
Abstract:
For most, the sense of the body is a fixed, stable perception, but this is not always the case. Dissociative experiences describe a set of clinical experiences characterised by feelings of detachment from the self, and in immersive Virtual Reality settings one can experience a body that is radically different from one’s own. In this talk, I will describe my research exploring how the sense of the body is constructed from sensations arising from the external world and sensations arising internally from within the body, such as the heartbeat. The application of this research for understanding both dissociation and how people interact with Virtual Reality will be discussed.
