Title: Sonifying the Imperceptible: Two Case Studies on Movement Sonification and Body Perception
Abstract:
Movement generates continuous information that often remains imperceptible during bodily practice. Sonification offers a way to transform this data into sensory experience that can support bodily perception.
This seminar presents two case studies of movement sonification. ZENS explores the sonification of movement trajectory as a means to expand bodily perception during yoga practice. SONA introduces an interactive sonification interface that translates real-time movement data into metaphorical sound textures, making subtle movement fluctuations perceptible.
Through these two cases, the seminar discusses how different sonification approaches can shape bodily experience and support processes of awareness and reflection during movement.
Bio
MSc. Concepción Valdez is a PhD Candidate in Computer Science at CICESE, under the supervision of Dr. Mónica Tentori (CICESE) and Dr. Ana Tajadura-Jiménez (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid).
Her work lies at the intersection of human–computer interaction, body perception, and interactive sonification, exploring how real-time sound can make internal body processes perceptible and support movement awareness and control.
